This gorgeous feather pendant necklace is made from Recycled Leather and Vinyl belts and bags. They represent the beautiful Tui bird of New Zealand. Each feather pendant is hand painted and finished with recycled sterling silver to represent the spine of the feather. The pendant comes with a long (60cm) silver coloured chain and the feather measures approx 7.5cm (3 inches) long.
Thankfully not currently a threatened species, the Tui has been able to survive because of its ability to adapt to changed environments and gaps left in the ecosystem by the demise of other birds. A nectar feeder, the tui is a vocal and boisterous bird, common across New Zealand.
Although it appears black from a distance, up close the Tui’s feathers are distinctively an iridescent green, blue and purple. Tui have two voice boxes and can vocalise a wide range of sounds – including mimicking human sounds like car alarms, mobile phones and even speech. Intelligent and resourceful, the Tui has long been prized by Maori for its feathers and for it’s meat, especially in pre-European times.
