This stylish statement hand painted cuff bracelet is made from Recycled Leather and Vinyl belts and bags. It represents the elegant and majestic Kotuku (White Heron/White Egret) of New Zealand.
Each cuff is individually hand painted and measures approximately 5cm (2 inches) wide and is finished with a black snap fastener. Cuffs are made according to your wrist size. If this is for a gift and you don’t know the exact measurements, please indicate if you require a small (<6.5 inches), medium (7-8 inches) or large (8.5+ inches) size.
Kotuku have only one breeding site in New Zealand, located in remote and wild South Westland. Because of its scarcity, and it’s exceptionally beautiful feathers the Kotuku was highly prized by Maori and Europeans alike. The species was almost extinguished after its only breeding site on the Waitangiroto River was discovered in 1865. So important to the Maori was the Kotuku that to compare someone to this bird in Maori society is to offer one of the highest compliments.
By 1941 there were only four nests remaining and thankfully the site was declared a reserve and wildlife refuge. The numbers have now stabilised with a permanent population of around 100 to 120 birds. Although recovering, this is still a fragile species in New Zealand and highly vulnerable to environmental changes, introduced predators like rats, cats and stoats, as well as human interference.
