A wee chat with Homespun Holistics

by Joanne Davies

Rachel Ray and Wendy Nute are the co-founders of Homespun Holistics. They hand make all of their products from their home-based studio near Matakana, north of Auckland. All Homespun Holistics products have been carefully researched and and are produced with the least effect possible on the enviroment and contain no nasty additives.

They have a gorgeous selection of balms for study, relaxation and healing, oils for masage and aromatherapy, moisturising creams, bath products and beautiful perfumes scented with essential oils.
Let's hear their story in their own words...

Tell us about what you create:
We lovingly, create hand made body care and remedies using a combination of 100% natural and organic ingredients, which are all researched, made, packaged and marketed in house.

How long have you been making?
We have been making our products for 3 years now.

How did you learn your craft and who/what are your influences?
We learnt by attending courses
of study, researching and using focus groups for testing.
Our influences are to use items that are as natural for the body and environment as possible.

As qualified therapists we were looking for a product that was natural and felt non greasy and lovely on the skin. Unable to find products suitable to use we decided to create our own.

Rachel and Wendy with a selection of their range.

What inspires you?
When we create products it’s wonderful when someone writes to us with how they have helped them for example, one of many testimonials, this one is for our Sleep Well Product:

"When i saw your product advertised, I decided to give the pillow spray & pulse point a go. First & second night went well but then at school she fractured her wrist....we didn’t realise that it was fractured till the next day, but she slept that night & then every night since with her bulky cast on her arm. Your product is amazing. Thanks again & we will be back to order more”.

Another comment this time for our PM Less Pulse Point:

"I have spent this weekend massaging PM Less into my daughters back every 3-4 hours, I don't know where we would be without it!!  It is just so great to be able to use not only a lovely product that helps but also a product that is not doing her any harm".

What difficulties do you face with creating your particular products?
All of our products are handmade which takes time but it means we are totally connected to the whole process of making, packaging and marketing our products

Do you have another job or is this your sole occupation?
We are both qualified Massage and Reiki therapists

Do you have a film or book recommendation for us?
The Secret - in book and film format and must for anyone wishing to achieve their goals.

Care to share a recipe or favourite snack?
We are really loving beetroot, apple and carrot salad at the moment, with lemon juice, flat leaf parsley, a dash of olive oil and pinch of salt whizzed up in the thermomix :-)

What is your favourite NZ destination?
Taupo Bay, we love the Northland

If cost was not an issue, what item would be at the top of your DiscoverMe wish list?
There are so many wonderful things on Discover Me we would like to be able to buy something from each category and even each artisan maker - it’s great to see other people making items by hand and having a place to sell them.

Thank you Rachel and Wendy for showing us into the world of Homespun Holistics. See their full range here.
